Ancienne ville parthe, située sur la rive gauche du Tigre, au sud-est de l’actuelle Bagdad. De cette résidence d’hiver des souverains parthes puis sassanides, il subsiste les vestiges d’un gigantesque palais voûté, le Taq Kisra, dont la construction entreprise par Sh buhr Ier (241-272) fut poursuivie par Chosroès Ier (531-575).

Ctésiphon est mentionnée pour la première fois comme un camp militaire grec, en face de Séleucie. En \CTÉSIPHON 129, lorsque les Parthes Arsacides annexèrent la Babylonie, ils établirent un cantonnement à Ctésiphon. Au cours des guerres contre Rome, pour des raisons stratégiques, ils firent de Ctésiphon leur capitale, fonction qu’elle devait conserver sous les Sassanides. En 115, Trajan s’empara de la ville, et la domination romaine entraîna la disparition de la civilisation grecque. Ctésiphon retrouva une certaine prospérité sous les Sassanides (224-631). Mais, en 637, les Arabes conquirent la ville et firent du Taq Kisra une mosquée. En 763, lorsque le calife Al-Man ル r fonda Bagdad, Ctésiphon fut désertée.
